Our clients ask us about SEO a l l t h e t i m e. It’s safe to say that SEO is a hot topic. As it should be, and it sometimes slips under the radar for newly launched websites.

Jules recently attended a workshop about SEO vs. Blogs by Sarah Stockdale, Founder and CEO of Growclass and, as predicted, she confirmed that good SEO is more important than just having blog content on your website. Don’t get us wrong, blogs are beneficial, but it’s about quality and not quantity.

Google also prefers “fresh” SEO so that’s why for some of our clients we sign them on for monthly or quarterly SEO refresh packages, ensuring their keywords are never going stagnant. When you’re working on the SEO of your website, it’s not something you will edit once, and never edit again. It is something you need to monitor monthly. You will want to let Google know you are updating content based on what people are looking for, while maintaining the quality of the content being added.

Understanding SEO as a beginner can be confusing, but it doesn't have to be if you break it down.

We wanted to share 5 SEO tips for beginners if you felt motivated to try it out on your own:

ONE

Create a list of relevant keywords

  •  What are consumers looking for when searching for your business or brand online?

TWO

Implement keywords into the content of your website. This not only includes your page titles, but the rest of the metadata. You also need to ensure your keywords are within your content.

  • Tip: Having keywords in the first paragraph lets google know the focus of your content.

THREE

Hop on the backlink bandwagon

  • A backlink is when you link one website to another through a link, “In essence, backlinks to your website are a signal to search engines that others vouch for your content” (Moz, 2021). As long as you are backlinking properly with credible websites you will be improving your SEO ranking.
  • Ask current relationships to include links to your website, list your business on online directories and create articles that include links back to your website (Google views these as inbound links). We like to support our clients with backlinking services to help their SEO. We start by researching news articles that include our clients and other credible sources.

FOUR

Create useful content, it’s about quality not quantity

  • Quit the jabber jab and get to the point. Communicate effectively, not with jargon word fillers. It’s easy to ramble on but Google and other search engines like when you get to the point. Include keywords effectively and ensure you are using proper sentence structure and once the search engines review your website content your ranking will be closer to the top.

FIVE

Utilize Google Analytics and evaluate your strategy

  • A free tool that is crucial to your digital marketing strategy would be Google Analytics. The information included in your business’s Google Analytics profile can help you create the best 2021 marketing plan. This program shows you valuable behaviour information about your website visitors. This information can help you create better Google Ads, Facebook ads and other digital marketing ads for your business. It’s not too late to sign in to your Analytics account and review the data. When The Small Social Company is onboarding a client we like to review the prospects Google Analytics account to see where their traffic is coming from online. For example, one of our restaurant clients shows that Instagram is the driver of the majority of their website traffic therefore we constructed an authoritative Instagram marketing strategy that would help the client’s online success.

Like a lot of things, starting out with SEO is a lot of trial and error. Don’t forget to refresh those keywords!
