We hear from a lot of businesses who want a better digital marketing strategy, but simply don’t have the time to put towards making one. Consistency is key, but can also be a challenge for many business owners, and that’s okay! Running a business is its own challenge with constantly shifting demands. This is where digital marketing agencies come into play as the perfect tool for building your online presence. From creating strategies and designing graphics to writing captivating content and managing your social media accounts, digital marketing agencies can do it all to make your life a little easier. But how do you find the right fit in such a large marketplace? Here are five tips to make your search a little easier.

This might sound like the most obvious step to consider, but it often goes overlooked. Outlining current challenges is a great way of guiding your search since it gives a clearer picture of which agency services are needed for your business.

Don’t have any challenges? No problem!

Marketing Agencies are still a great resource for growing your business. Instead of detailing existing difficulties, you can always try listing your requirements for working with a Marketing Agency. Examples of requirements can be:

  • Performance Results of X% or Higher
  • Hours of Operation
  • Service Types
  • Budget

It’s important to set your requirements early so you can effectively describe the needs of your business during conversations with potential Marketing Agencies.

If your challenges or goals are focused around a specific aspect of your business, then seeking out an agency with proven results for similar challenges can be a good method of narrowing down your search.

When reviewing agency portfolios, it is important to compare their proven results against your challenges and must-haves. Do they have experience working within your industry? Have they solved challenges like yours in the past? Did the end result meet your expectations? Being able to answer these questions can put you on the right path when reviewing an agency's previous work.

If this information isn’t available, even upon request, then that’s a red flag serving to narrow your search results even more!

Speaking of red flags, while it’s important to look for the good in Marketing Agencies, it’s equally important to keep an eye out for anything that may cause heartbreak in the future. Some red flags are up to personal preference and expectations, but here are some examples everyone should be on the lookout for when approaching an agency:

  • Messy Websites
  • No Testimonials, Case Studies, or Portfolio
  • Over-Promising

If a website is messy or difficult to navigate, it could point to an underlying issue about the quality of work and attention to detail provided by that agency. If there are no testimonials or portfolio examples available even upon request, then a similar issue regarding quality of work and customer satisfaction may be at play. Agencies that over-promise right from the start risk falling short of the mark, leaving their clients with a sense of disappointment at the final outcome.

Reviews are the tried and tested way of seeing what experiences other people have had with a service or product. This works for Marketing Agencies, too. From effective communication to the quality of a proposed solution, looking over reviews can highlight potential benefits to working with one agency over another.

Uncertain which agency would be best for your specific problem? Look through reviews to see what others have to say about their experience working with that agency!

Our final tip is the simplest of the five. Find an agency whose values reflect your own, whose employees take the time to understand the needs and concerns of your business, and who have a genuine interest in seeing your business thrive. If an agency does not seem to meet your values or respect you as a client, then it is time to move on.
